Like everything else in life, business has good times and bad times. Even though shifting times get you to ebb in the flow of your work, you need to understand that sometimes that’s just how it is. The most important thing is to be prepared for such times.
When you’ve finished the last project that you were working on, and you realize that you have absolutely nothing else on your slate, the idea of not having any more work starts to sink in. The first thing everyone does is to comb through their email folders and try to find some project that might have been missed. Finally, you realize that there is actually nothing else for you to do and start to panic. However, this is the wrong move. While a lack of work means you are not earning, you could still do the following during this time;
1. Think of new ideas
You have a lot of free time when you are going 10-12 hours without work and can use it to come up with fresh ideas. Even though it is a bit nerve-wracking not to have some pay to look forward to, think of new ways to do what you love. Explore the internet and research for new ideas, and set apart some time during the day when you focus on self-development only.
2. Refresh your portfolio
You may have had a long streak of constantly flowing work and so much to do that you haven’t had time to update your portfolio. This is among one of the first things you could do when you have some free time on your hands. As a designer, this is the document that speaks to your prowess and capabilities. Therefore, you should rigorously edit it whenever you have the time.
3. Get in touch with old clients
Past clients know what potential you have, and if you did a solid project, chances are you will get subsequent work. There is nothing wrong with calling an old client and chatting them up to find out if there are any new projects on the way. This mostly works in your favor if you know the client usually needs a lot of design work. By calling such a client, you may land a job that might have passed you by so put your business first and start making calls.
4. Follow up every lead
Sometimes designers of every kind miss out on work because it is not what they are used to. Every designer eventually finds something they are comfortable with and goes with it at the expense of lesser favorites.
